Relationships: Ron Howard depicts the storytelling theme of relationships as a relationship between anyone and anything. In the picture above, there are many photographic aspects that convey this theme of relationship. The photographer silhouetted the two children, the representation of relationship, in order to accomplish two main things: to stress more focus on the two children, and to highlight the simplicity of their relationship. The use of silhouetting blocks out all the details of the children, leaving them as two black figures in the foreground. This extracts the complexities of the children's physical features, and exposes their simplistic, ingenue relationship. They are children, so their connection should be carefree and simple, just like the photograph illustrates. The blurring of the background also draws attention to the silhouetted children, who are just playing and enjoying childhood as it seems.
Mood: Ron Howard depicts mood as something that conveys atmosphere, tone, or emotion. In the picture above, there are multiple photographic aspects that convey this theme. In this picture, the photographer captures two people standing under an umbrella, at night, in a city. These people are silhouettes due to the exposure of light in this shot, which emphasizes the atmosphere of the night life in a city. The yellow-green filter on the piece also helps to define the city life, when putting extra attention on the light in the piece, which is already exposed.
Goal: Ron Howard depicts goal as whatever the character is pursuing. In the picture about, the photographer meticulously conveys this theme through multiple photographic aspects. The photographer sets up the frame in a homely looking salon, where a dog had been getting its hair cut. The goal most definitely was cutting this dog's hair, since it had copious amounts of that needed to be cut off. The photographer captured how the task must have been difficult by capturing all the clumps of hair scattered on the ground below the dog.
Backstory: Ron Howard depicts backstory as a history that promotes fuller understanding of the narrative. In the picture above, there are many photographic aspects that convey this theme of backstory. In the foreground of the shot, there are two girls, probably around the age of ten or twelve. They are both wearing the color pink, which usually symbolizes a sort of feminine and gentle nature. However, the photographer places the two girls in a forest, contrasting the femininity of the pink with a rugged wilderness background.
Character: Ron Howards describes character as anyone or anything. In the picture above, there are many photographic aspects that convey this theme of character. In the foreground of the shot, there is a little boy who is sticking his tongue out at the camera. The shot is in black and white, with a primarily dark background. Putting the boy in a white tee shirt makes him really stand out against the background. The light colors symbolize a sort pure and innocent nature, which this boy most likely has. The use of black and white usually emphasizes simplicity, and in this shot, it helps to focus on this boy's ingenuity.
Obstacle: Ron Howard depicts obstacle as anything or anyone in the character's way. In the picture above, the photographer right off the bat uses the rule of thirds to bring focus to his character on the right side of the shot. This character is portrayed as walking through a blizzard in a town that seems almost deserted. The blizzard is obviously the obstacle for this character. The photographer also has pieces of snow on the lens, making the blizzard seem heavier, and the goal harder to achieve. The blurring of the middle of the photo, where it seems as if the character is heading towards, also reinforces that the blizzard is a major obstacle, making the goal of this character quite ambiguous to us, the viewer.
Unknown: Ron Howard depicts the unknown as anything that is unexpected, a twist. In the picture above, there are multiple photographic aspects conveying this theme. The object that the photographer is ambiguous as it is. It is a spiral staircase, but we as the viewer know nothing about it. Then, this photo also contains what I like to call photographic irony. The picture is photographed in black and white, which usually represents simplicity, and a more straightforward idea. However, this spiral staircase seems complex and mysterious, therefore having two contradictory aspects, which ends up adding to the unknown theme in this photograph.
Setting and Time: Ron Howard depicts setting as any location or environment. He also depicts time as something that represents time of day or time in history. In the photograph above, there are multiple photographic aspects emphasizing this theme. The time of day set in the photo is sunset, as depicted by the sun setting in the lower third of the picture. The time of day is also emphasizes by the darkness of everything around the sun. Not saying that everything is dark, just noticeably darker than the sun. This photo is also set up in what is most likely a suburb based on three aspects. On the bottom of the picture, there are trees, usually associated with forests and places away from cities. However, on the edges of the photo there are sides of houses, and in the background a plane is visible, hinting that this photo was taken near an airport, in a more rural place, most likely a suburb.
Discovery: Ron Howard depicts discovery as a key and potentially pivotal item, place, or truth that is uncovered. In the picture above, there are many photographic aspects that convey this theme. The focus is on the sparkler in the girl's hand, which is the object of discovery. Putting the girl in the mid ground portrays her as second in importance in this photograph since the main focus is supposed to be on the burst of light. The burst also covers the girl's mouth, which can be used to convey a multitude of emotions. Instead of her mouth conveying what looks to be captivation, the photographer uses the burst to captivate the viewer instead.
